Genetic engineering of embryonic stem cells may be one pathway to extending life, but nothing is immortal, not even the Universe. A more efficient approach to extending the useful human life span is through human cloning. Human cloning adds a whole new dimension to extending the range and scope of the human life span.

Well, I'm not quite sure about immortality, but there is definitely the possibility of lengthening the average lifespan through genetic engineering.
