How do you calculate temperature change between two different mediums over time?

Lets say you have 1 kg of sea water @ 302 kelvin, with 1 kg of air at 320 kelvin. Then, let us change the temperature of the sea water to 270 kelvin. What would the resulting temperature of the air be?

  • Calculate the amount of heat liberated upon cooling the seawater ( using the specific heat and , if the water freezes, the latent heat as well). Then calculated the change in air temp by giving that heat to the air and using the specific heat of air.

    1kg * Cs * ( 302 - 270)C = 1kg * Ca * (T - 320)

with Cs and Ca the specific heats of seawater and air respectivelt.

Note that we assume that the seawater and air form a closed system. Also note that we force the heat to flow from cold to warm, which requires work.
