Is this a good first time computer build?

FIRST OFF!!! I am relatively new to the computer neighborhood and was wondering if these computer parts are compatible to one another. This is the first computer that i will be putting together by myself and i need a little help. Assuming that i know completely nothing about computers, i need you (the great people of answers.yahoo.com) to treat me like a know-nothing delinquent.

By the way, i am going to be (soon) running 2 video cards, so if anyone can give me a paragraph or two on what SLI or CrossfireX is and the difference, or maybe even how they work, or how i would set that stuff up, that would be greatly appreciated!!

I am kind of on a budget i guess you can say? But if anyone can rate these parts, tell me if they are compatible with one another, and give me tips/tricks/ hints on buying/building/maintaining a lower high end gaming PC. And if you could, give me parts that will keep the performance at the same level and drop the price, or maybe even lower the price and raise the performance.

  • It's pretty decent for a first time build. 8.8/10

For the same price (or a little more), you can get an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560/560ti which is more powerful than the 6850.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8... - GTX 560

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8... - GTX 560ti - Slightly more powerful.

The 6850 is still pretty decent, but it's just my recommendation.

You should also try to look at Intel i5 and i7s. They outpeform all AMD Phenoms. But you would have to find a new motherboard.

SLI/Crossfire is basically having 2 of the same video cards for increased performance. Having 2 of the cards will have a notable increase on performance in games, but requires a pretty good PSU, and I know Crysis 2 has a problem with running in SLI/Crossfire. Also, some games microstutter and have some graphical problems in SLI/Crossfire, so it's just best to get a powerful single card instead.

You can try to find a cheaper motherboard that supports Crossfire/SLI. Asus has pretty good build quality, but be sure to look at Gigabyte, ASRock, and MSI. Also, be sure to find an AM3 mobo for that processor.

For Modern Warfare 3 I would say it would run on max settings with no problems, Battlefield 3, probably at a decent framerate with AA turned off, GTA IV is a bad port so you might get some framerate problems, Crysis should run pretty good too.

  • Case: It's okay, if you like it then it good enough.

Mobo: Pretty good, got that 990 chipset which will help for future upgrades.

CPU: Don't expect much of an improvement over a 955BE unless you plan on video encoding. The 955BE it equally as good, better to OC and cheaper than a 1100T

PSU: Pretty good, 1 lesson to learn is never skrimp on a PSU, it'll last multiple builds. I run a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8... (Only real difference- Modular, slightly more efficient, extra 2 years warranty and a few extra cables that I dont even use.

GFX Cards: Could do with investing more into this, although a 6850 is good value for money you should put more emphasis on your GPU if you want to game.for an extra few $ you can go for the 6870 for that little bit of shader speed, but overall a 6950 or a 560ti would be a nice improvement.

Ram: Spot on, would recommend a better brand tho, maybe G-skill(But that's just my preference.)

HDD: WD Black scorpio has had some average reviews, esp with noise levels and reliability. My choice would be F3 spinpoint best performing HDD out there.

OS: Don't buy windows, pirate it(I must warn you that downloading windows is highly illegal and i seriously recommend you do it.)

Over all, pretty nice build, with a few tweaks you'll be sorted.

  • I would change out the case and the video card, mobo, and cpu.

highest end video card by far is the geforce gtx580. evga has a lifetime warranty if you register within 30 days.

it's also good for adobe photoshop and premiere.

for the case, I would pick the antec nine hundred two v3 (mid tower) or the twelve hundred v3 (full tower). more fans and more airflow. the twelve hundred can have more optional fans to blow out the dust. up to 7 I think.

your motherboard can take memory up to ddr3-1866 without overclocking apparently.

    DDR3 2133(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 Hz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

this will speed up your machine a fair amount, using ddr3-1866.

I am choosing ddr3-1600 for the mobo I chose because it's the fastest without OCing.

for a proc I chose an intel i7-2600k. faster than AMD. the best by far is the intel i7-995x, but that can get very expensive very fast. I was looking at a system for about $4000 (I need to reprice). the video card I chose is more expensive by about 5x-6x.

prices have gone up for high-end systems and gone down for low-end systems. in 1970's there were ads for $1000 5MB 8" hard disk.

also, you can't legally purchase the OEM version of windows unless you intend to resell the computer. OEM only licensed for resale, and YOU have to provide all support. sorry.

  • Easy to overclock and runs at around 60 to 70 frames per second.

it ran BF3 beta on the highest settings no problem spend the extra money

    do not skimp.
