Who were the generals in the battle of Antietam?

There were more than Robert E. Lee and George McClellan.

  • There were probably at least 50 generals who fought in that battle. Lee's corps commanders were James Longstreet and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. McClellan's were Joseph Hooker, Edwin Sumner, Fitz-John Porter, William Franklin, Ambrose Burnside, and Joseph Mansfield. J.E.B. Stuart commanded the Confederate cavalry and Alfred Pleasonton commanded the Union horse soldiers.

Many other high-ranking officers commanded divisions at Antietam. Confederate Major General A.P. Hill played a huge role in the battle when he arrived on the field with his "Light Division" as the battle was winding down with the Confederate right in extreme peril; if the Union IX Corps commanded by Burnside had reached the Potomac, it could have cut Lee off from Virginia and possibly forced him to surrender. Hill's counterattack drove Burnside's men back across Antietam Creek and caused the battle to end in a tactical draw.

You can see the full orders of battle, with the name of every general present, for each side on Wikipedia.
