can I prune our new pine tree?

we got a tree yesterday but we couldn't find anyone selling cut trees, the only real trees were live ones we bought a cute little one that's in a pot, it'll be a nice size next year so I'm going to keep it in a pot or probably put it in a bigger pot, I was wondering, can I prune it to improve it's shape and keep it from growing too fast. how much water should a *live* tree drink in a day, I have no Idea what kind of pine it is, the label said "living christmas tree" I am in New Zealand and in an area where it will get really hot once summer starts, how do I care for it then, I think I will move it out of the house and put it on our deck in the shade, or should I keep it inside for a bit longer because it's cooler inside?

Update:

ok, I'll make sure it gets water every day because we will go without rain for weeks.

  • Pine trees do good in hot weather as long as they get rain.

If you have a New Zealand pohutukawa you can prune it after flowering to control its height and shape.

  • i think its ok to prune it. i would keep it inside where its more cooler. i would water it at least once a day
