When and how did shaving become a cultural norm?

Why women's underarms and legs???

  • I believe hollywierd had alot to do with it. Once films and television started opening up a door to how other people lived, the average person wanted to look like the movie stars and started to copy them...

The changing of womens clothing styles helped push the issue as well. For the first time in history, hemlines were getting shorter and it was okay to have bare arms.....

Shaving here in America really did not catch on until the 1950s. Sure, there were some women who shaved before that, but they were mainly (not all) 'ladies of the evening' protecting themselves and clients from lice.

  • When silk became expensive to use for stockings in the 1940's, women shaved their legs and drew a line with eyeliner pencil up the back in order to fake the stocking effect.

Underarms were shaved because the Egyptians realized it reduced the smell.

  • Old West prostitutes shaved under their arms to advertise that they were "bug" free.
