how to deal with estate agencies (UK)?

I'll be arriving Birmingham city and the first thing I'll do is to visit estate agencies. I am not familiar on how they perform. They show me flats around and then charge me %10 of the monthly rent fee for every month? How much should they charge me for? Who do I pay my monthly rent the agency or the flat owner?

    You will pay the rent only ,not commission, to the agent.

    You will be told the arrangement for paying the rent by the agent.
